Are you a fiscal gentleman or lady that manages your money well? Let this post help you out!

I do not care what anyone says or tells you, but saving is important. Supremely important, in fact. Why? Because all things first start with having money; therefore, you must save some.

Want to buy a house? You have to have a down payment. Want to start a business? You need to have the funds to pay employees and the lease on the storefront. Want to invest in your favorite company? You have to be able to put money in the brokerage account. And the list goes on and on.

I’ll give you an example of why you need to save money.

Every year for my birthday, I like to buy stocks.

Generally, shares in a 500 index fund. However, if you are broke, then there is no way to make this ice cream dream a reality.

Instead of an exotic vacation, new toy, fancy new set of wheels, or expensive birthday cake, I prefer to buy myself a $3.50 cupcake. Wait…in providing full disclosure I paid tax on that cupcake, so it really cost me $3.85.

I actually had about $500-$5,000 that I could invest. So, where did that other $496.15 or 4,996.15 go? Toward earning me interest of course!

We cannot all be like the jeopardy champ that has won a mind boggling 28 times in a row. His total winnings are now at the $2 million-dollar mark. Incredible!

However, we cannot base our financial futures on being able to answer in what year was the Louisiana purchase; 1803. Oops…I meant to say, What is 1803?

We need our money to work for us while we are sleeping.

I know the cast of Friends is still raking it in, but they are from a different time. When studios had to pay to play. That is, pay these actors on the back-end with royalties in order to get them to commit to playing the same characters for a decade or more. That is 12-15 hour days spend on a studio back lot that you cannot get back.

So I say kudos to them and the casts of the recently ended The Big Bang Theory and Game of Thrones. However, we all can’t be Starks or Dr. Sheldon Cooper, Dr. Leonard Hofstadter, Dr. Koothrappali, or Howard no Dr. in front. Just Howard. 🤣

You must save because you do not know when the next check will stop coming in. Let’s examine this further shall we? In one of my posts, I wrote about why Academy Award Winner Halle Berry saves so much.

See my post Why Halle Berry And I Continue To Save So Much

Because if you play spin the bottle with your finances, then it tends to land on BROKE!

It is no secret that here in the good old US of A many high school and college graduates know nothing about finances. However, here at Greenbacks Magnet we aim to change all that.

That is why I write cautionary money tales like today’s post.

So let me give you some examples of why not to depend on big paychecks, royalties, or sequin jumpsuits.

A DIME ISN’T WORTH A NICKEL It was recently reported on May 14, 2019 that Brian May said that Queen hasn’t made any money from Bohemian Rhapsody. Now that’s a head scratcher. The film went on to gross over $900 million at the box office and its star, Rami Malek, with his performance as Freddie Mercury earned him the Oscar for Best Actor.

What do you gotta do to earn a few coins? Invent the wheel. Or in this case, invent music!

In yet another tale of musicians and money, David Lee Roth of Van Halen fame said the following in a December 2018 interview, “up until 18 months ago, I was making pennies in royalty on a $20 Van Halen record.” In addition, Roth stated, “I got butchered 40 years ago. I made over a billion dollars for Warner Bros. I watched my whole fortune walk off into another man’s pocket.”

This is sad and confusing to say the least. I would be a disgruntled employee too if I sold millions of albums, t-shirts, spandex leotards, and headbands only to receive pennies on the dollar!

Money Advice I Got From John Legend

This reminds me of what I read in Pat Benatar’s book, she stated that she made her record label $75 million dollars and she felt used, abused, and thrown away.

After reading her book, I knew I better make sure to fund my retirement account like no tomorrow. When you see people work that hard for so many years talk about getting the shaft, then you know us regular folks in the salt mines better get it together.

Don’t even get me started on all the celebrities that owe the IRS! It just goes to show you that saving money has to be a part of your financial freedom equation.

There is no financial independence when you have debt obligations. More cannot go out than is coming in.

WE ALL MUST FACE THE MUSIC

Here’s the thing. We ALL are going to stop working someday. It is simply up to you to decide what you want to and ow you want to live.

You may think that adults should know how to manage their money. However, if you never learned how to balance $100 in your checking account, then how on earth is someone supposed to earn and build a million bucks!

I work under the impression and assumption that if most people can manage $1,000, then they can manage $100,000 or more.

If I still have not convinced you to save, then just let me share this last story with you. If you saw The New Edition Story, then you know kids get ripped off too! Recording a hit album netted these kids $500 and a VCR! They decided to start taking more control of their money and their financial destiny. And you should too!

If some company goes belly up and decides not to pay out it pension, then plan to make other arrangements. I don’t want to be left holding the bag for my retirement after giving my youth to some company who tells me to invest in their stock while at the same time cashing out their own chips like Enron.

That is why I save and invest.

I increase my goals EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

Doesn’t matter if every goal doesn’t get hit, I still have something to aim at.

This is what I have decided for my future. Here’s my financial close-up. 😉

Here is a peak behind my financial savings curtains.

Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Greenbacks Magnet savings goals:

2018: $13,333

2019: $14,000

2020: $15,000

2021: $16,000

2022: $17,000

2023: $18,000

2024: $20,000

2025: $25,000

As you can see, my ultimate goal is to save $25,000 per year. That would net me $100,000 every 4 years! It is all about planning and discipline.

I do not care if your goal is to be able to make rent next month or buy a private plane next year.

Whatever you do, win, lose or save; make a goal and stick to it.

The one-tweet financial plan

“Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.” — William A. Ward

That’s right folks. Step right up. Don’t be shy.

I’m about to simplify your life. Your financial life anyway. A one-tweet financial plan is the way to go.

You see that quote at the start of this blog post.

There, I just gave it to you in the quote stated above. The end.

Just kidding. But seriously, it is in the quote above. I will just expand upon it.

Warning this post is full of tweets! But lots of information. Stay with me! 😉

WHAT IS A ONE-TWEET FINANCIAL PLAN?

A financial plan that is 240 characters or less and can be sent out in a tweet.

I know what you’re thinking. Yeah, right. Well, since seeing is believing I will show you exactly what I mean.

Here is my one-tweet financial plan.

And due to the recent government shutdown, I have also created a one-tweet financial plan government shutdown edition. 😉 It’s kind of like how they created the Scrabble game deluxe. You take an already good thing and then just expand upon it and make it even better.

I also like to think ahead to the future and plan for my taxes. You need to save today because the future gets more expensive. What costs a $1 today will cost $1.25 in the future. Plan ahead.

Speaking of Scrabble…

LISTEN

It is one of the best qualities you can have. Being a good listener can lead to lasting marriages, better employment, and happier relationships.

You see #2 there. @mjp2520. Yes, that’s me. 😉

I started reading about personal finance and attending seminars or conferences long before I started writing and tweeting about it. Coming from a place of experience and information gives you a different point of view (POV). That POV can make you an expert in your field. Never underestimate the power of just listening and observing.

THINK

I want you to write down your goals, thoughts, wants, needs, and desires. Like I said before, seeing is believing. Think before you act.

There is nothing wrong with moving slowly or with caution. However, that does not give you the right to move like a turtle. First, think. Then act and move expeditiously once a decision has been made. Move quick. Make haste. Do not overthink it. This can lead to analysis paralysis.

Moving slowly does allow you to more clearly see the path ahead. But once you see it, I want you to run toward your goal. Not walk. RUN!

EARN

You have to earn money to save it. It is just that simple.

I was in debt up to my eyeballs. However, I did not toss my hands in the air and say who cares as I will be in debt forever. Nope. Not me. I chipped away at my debt. Then, I slowly started to have savings. I emerged from the debt cocoon I was in and became a soon to be debt-free butterfly.

I found ways to get rid of my debt. By any means necessary. It didn’t matter if I had to sell items, save my change, get 0% deals on every item I purchased, or stop buying chewing gum just to save a buck.

Once the debt started going away, I had tons of disposable income. Go figure.

INVEST

I cannot stress this enough. Investing can be the difference between you being one of the haves or have nots. I hate to break it to you, but the top earners invest.

Investing is a long game.

I read the wealthy invest up to 20 percent or more of their income each and every year.

The 1 percent are making a killing in the stock market. And you can too.

When I decided I was going to be rich, I turned my attention toward investing. If you want to know where Greenbacks Magnet is investing, then check out my post below. 😉

See my post How I turned a $450 car payment into $100,000

Here are some of my tweets on some good investment books to read.

The wealthy also read A LOT!!!

According to Grant Cardone, CEO’s read 60 books and attend 6 conferences a year. The average person reads less than one book a year. I read that in the 10X Rule.

Read the 10x rule. Took his advice. Set 10x goals and do 10x more action. It worked. Many thanks! Went from saving $10 to $10k a year. #OBSESSED

WAIT

Yes, like the Maroon 5 song. Wait.

Anything worth having is worth the wait.

You know all those overnight success stories you hear? Well, those are garbage. It takes years of hard work, persistence, determination and sacrifice to get anywhere worth going.

All those bands you hear about or people you see on television. They were honing their craft long before records executives starting signing them to deals.

Gene Simmons said he was going from gig to gig in an old van living off hot dogs with his bandmates in KISS.

Pat Benatar left her job as a bank teller to start working as a singing waitress making $4,000 a month before she hit it big.

You know their names now, but there was a time they were broke and unknown.

Success comes from doing not luck. And the toiling to make that success happen, can take years or even decades. So, prepare yourself.

Don’t be like Beetlejuice. Remember that scene in the movie where he took his number and was impatient. It was hilarious. One of Michael Keaton’s most memorable roles.

The point is that you have to be patient. I do not mean wait forever. I just mean that all good things do take some amount of time.

Don’t be so quick to judge or criticize others, before you know the full story.

FORGIVE

They say it’s divine.

“Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” – Oscar Wilde

And I make sure to forgive. I always forgive, once.

See my post A Christmas Carol: Lessons in Finance, Business, and Life

TRY

Don’t be a quitter. Try first. You will never know if you have got the goods to make it, unless you get out there and do it. Do something. Don’t just wait to be discovered. Get out there and meet people. Shake some hands. Knock down some doors. Make some phone calls. Just try.

SAVE

This one thing can change your life. Saving. It is the start of all things to come. The act alone is a reflection of who you are and what you value.

The foundation for all your future wealth is derived from this word and your ability to do it.

See my post How Millennial Money inspired me to start saving $13,333.06 a year

GIVE

You give as a way to reach back and help those that come after you. It is a way to show your gratitude for all the things those that came before you have done.

There was a time there was no stock market. Or anesthesia. 😮

Let’s take a little walk down Wall Street.

The NYSE celebrated its 200th anniversary in 1992. Wall Street started under a tree in 1792 with commodities.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was founded in 1896 with only 12 industrial stocks. Those 12 companies: American Cotton Oil, American Sugar, American Tobacco, Chicago Gas, Distilling & Cattle Feeding, General Electric, Laclede Gas, National Lead, North American, Tennessee Coal and Iron, U.S. Leather and U.S. Rubber.

My how things have changed. None of those stocks are now part of the DJIA.

The good thing about indexes is that unlike individual stocks, when things go south and a business performs badly or goes under, it is culled. That’s right. They remove it from the DJIA and replace it with another business. Usually one that is performing well. That is the reason you invest in indexes. For the protection against a business going out of business and you losing your shirt!

General Electric (GE) is the only member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average that has been in the index since it’s beginning in 1896. It is being taken out and replaced by Walgreens (WBA) as reported of July 2018. That’s a 122-year run.

They have made it easier for you to invest now than 100 years ago.

Dale Carnegie had to ask his mother to mortgage the house so that he could invest the funds in stocks that he knew. That was how he built his fortune. Remember to invest in what you know.  Earn a fortune and then give it away.

Giving is one of the best ways to be philanthropic.

Remember that part in the movie Troy where Achilles asks his mother if he should go to Troy. And she says to him only if he wants his name to be remembered and live on throughout the ages.

Giving is a way to have immortality.

Case in point, Ms. Oseola McCarty inspired many others to donate to charity as well after she donated her life savings of $150,000 to a college in 1995. How’s that for a swan song? One of the biggest donors she inspired: Media Magnate and Mogul Ted Turner.

So why is it even noteworthy when Oseola McCarty, an elderly woman, donates $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi? In the case of Ms. McCarty, it is the heart behind the gift, and the lifetime of effort that went into it. For her act of kindness, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor and got to ring the stock market opening bell.

How about that for recognition in helping others? And she asked nothing for herself or in return. These things were given to her for her charitable contribution to society.

Giving is passed down from generation to generation.

So, if you want to be immortal and have your memory live on forever, one word: give.

Gene Simmons On Power

“Walk amongst the natives by day, but in your heart be Superman.” ― Gene Simmons

In 2017, Gene Simmons wrote a book called, On Power: My Journey Through the Corridors of Power and How You Can Get More Power.

This book was nothing like I expected.

It was MORE.

Like the title says, it’s about getting more power. Become more powerful than you ever thought you could be. It all starts with your actions.

Let’s get right into it.

WHO IS GENE SIMMONS?

Image: Forbes.com

The short version is that he is a co-founder and front-man of the band KISS, that he helped start in the 1970’s. They are America’s #1 gold record-award-winning group of all time.

Image: New York Post

Gene grew up dirt poor. He practiced guitar for hours after watching The Beatles on an appearance of the Ed Sullivan show, he knew then that he wanted to be a rock star.

According to Harper Collins, the book was inspired by Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, Simmons offers his unique take on the dynamics of power in every realm of life, from the bedroom to the boardroom, to the world of rock, celebrity, and social media, to politics. With one-of-a-kind anecdotes from his life and career, as well as stories from historical and contemporary masters of power, including Winston Churchill, Napoleon Bonaparte, Warren Buffett, Michael Jordan, Oprah, and Elon Musk, Simmons crafts a persuasive and provocative theory on how the pursuit of power drives civilization and defines our lives.

Gene Simmons has an estimated net worth of over $50 million dollars. So, I decided to give the book a quick read. Glad I did.

POWER IS WHAT EVERYONE WANTS

People want power.

  • Power over their lives
  • Power over their time
  • Power over their professional lives and career
  • Power over their money

So, how do you get this so-called power.

It’s a power grab for sure.

Gene takes a no-holds-barred approach to his life and on power. It’s dog eat dog out there. You have to be one of the big dogs.

Gene believed that everyone deserves power and that it is yours for the taking.

In his book, he gives you the key to unlock the doors to the temple of power.

GENE ON EDUCATION

“It’s up to you to educate yourself.”

“It’s up to you to learn speaking skills and people skills.”

“It’s up to you to try (and usually fail, but to try again) all sorts of ventures.”

“Believe me, the library is the temple of God. Education is the most sacred religion of all.”

He graduated from Richmond College in New York City getting a bachelor’s degree in education. At one point, he was a school teacher in the Upper West Side.

Gene also speaks multiple languages such as German and Hebrew.

I noticed this was also a theme of Scrooge McDuck. Get a good education, become a linguist, and get to work.

I read everything I can get my little hands on. I go to the library every month. I regularly check out 4-5 books at a time. Sometimes more. I do believe in being well-read.

GENE ON SUCCESS

The rest is a combination of hard work, being at the right place …at the right time…with the right thing…oh yes…and more (never ending) hard work.”

You want success? Well, you have to work for it.

Gene puts his money where his mouth is.

He worked for a butcher hauling up huge slabs of meat and cleaning the blood off the butcher block. Gene has worked as a typist and sold fruit on the side of the road when he was 8 years old.

Make no mistake. Gene is a hard worker and a hustler. He was working multiple jobs to get ahead. Similar to Jay Leno.

As for myself, at one point, I was working as a waitress, cashier, or in sales. In addition, to going to college and studying at times up to 5-7 hours a day! Going to bed at 1 am and getting up at 6 am. Rinse and repeat! I did that for years.

GENE ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND CAPITALISM

“Before I ever knew what the word Entrepreneur was, I realized in America and in the Western part of the world in general, you are given the opportunity to be whatever you want to be. And that is all anyone should ever expect from the Capitalist system. The rest is up to you.”

Yep. America is the land of YOYO (You’re on your own).

You learn real quick that no one is coming to save you. You have to create your own safety net. You can’t depend on the government. The only person to depend and rely on is self. Get it? Got it? Good.

GENE ON MONEY

“So much of our popular mythology focuses on the negative aspects of power that we forget that gaining power is, perhaps, the only way to enable ourselves to make a difference in our lives and in the lives of others.”

Gene says you must first get your financial house in order before you can espouse love.

This is similar to what I once heard Tyra Banks mother say, “you have to get yourself together first, before you can help anybody else.”

You should always be looking for ways to earn and expand those earnings. KISS started out with nothing. They slowly built a following. IT. TOOK. YEARS. They were riding around in an old van going from gig to gig and living off hot dogs.

But KISS got smart. They started licensing their name. Everything from lunchboxes to t-shirts. Their moniker is big. Multi-million dollar deals got them to the top of the heap. Monetize everything is Gene’s motto. And he has. And it’s been lucrative to say the least.

So, there you have it. Gene Simmons on power. If you want it bad enough, you just have to work and rock-n-roll all night, like KISS, to get it.
