“You have to fight for the things you want.” – Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is a quadruple threat: actress, singer, dancer, and producer.

It was recently reported earlier this month that in March 2019 she got engaged to former MLB phenom Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod).

Jenny from the Bronx has parlayed her talent into major coin.

Her estimated net worth is over $300 million.

Insider reported it as high as $400 million!

So how did Jenny from the block earn her wealth?

Well, you are about to find out.

As you may know, I am on a mission: financial freedom.

Therefore, I started to study the self-made.

How did they get so wealthy? What did they do? What do they do with their 24 hours we are given in a single day?

Today we talk all things J to the L-O! Hello!

Let’s go!!!

STARTING OUT

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in Castle Hill, New York City. Growing up in the Bronx with her parents and siblings she watched how hard her parents worked to make a living as Puerto Ricans living in the richest country in the world.

She knew that she had a responsibility to do well because her parents gave and sacrificed so much.

She was quoted in an interview as saying, “I had to do well. I couldn’t let them (her parents) down.”

Jennifer says she was always training for something. And dance become her go to activity.

DANCING TO THE FRONT

In 1991, Lopez began appearing as a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color, where she remained a regular until she decided to pursue an acting career in 1993.

I love the lyrics to that song and how it starts out.

Like a moth to a flame

Burned by the fire

My love is blind

Can’t you see my desire

That’s the way love goes

So you could say like a moth to a flame, J. LO gravitated towards acting. Haha

You also may remember her dancing with Puffy or P. Diddy, as he goes by now, in the music video “Been Around The World.” That was in 1997. Haven’t seen it. No problem.

Her life and BANK ACCOUNT has never been the same.

A STAR IS BORN TO SING

After wrapping the film, Jennifer Lopez decided her next ambition would be recording an album. She set her sights on making this goal happen.

She got a record deal and worked with music super producer Tommy Mottola of Sony.

In an interview she said that people did not believe in her project; therefore, she had to put some of her own money into it.

You get what you give. What you put into things is what you get out of them. – Jennifer Lopez

That pet project would become her first album: On the 6.

In fact, “If You Had My Love” became the first debut single to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” a mere four months earlier.

One month later in June, her debut album “On the 6” was released, effectively solidifying Lopez’s status as a Latin pop artist. Certified by the RIAA, “On the 6” is 3x platinum, selling 3.42 million units worldwide.

She never looked back.

AIN’T IT FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT

Here is the video just in case you have not seen it.

She also did the song “Ain’t it Funny.” Again featuring her partner in crime (of making sweet music that is) Ja Rule. Together this pair made magic happen. They just had great chemistry when working together.

Ain’t it funny dropped off the J. LO album on June 20, 2001.

Here are some lyrics for you.

J to the L-O

Hello

Well now you know where I got that from, which I state at the beginning of this post. 😉

Here is the chorus

Ain’t it funny

Baby that you want me, when you had me

Love is crazy, I’m glad I can smile and say

Ain’t it funny

Then came “Jenny from the Block.” This song dropped on September 26, 2002.  One of her HOTTEST music videos! If you had no idea what she was capable or of who she was, then this video stopped all doubts.

The lyrics go like this.

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got

I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block

Love my life and my public

Put God first

Then can’t forget to stay real

To me it’s like breathing

Ah yes, she says to stay real or I’m real in this song. An obvious reference to her song I’m real with Ja Rule. 😉

Here is the chorus.

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got

I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block

Used to have a little, now I have a lot

No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!)

Check it out here.

Unlike her previous studio albums: On the 6 (1999) and J.Lo (2001), Lopez had a more “hands-on” role on This Is Me… Then. The 2002 album also had more of an adult-R&B sound. Musically, majority of the songs on This Is Me… Then were lyrically “dedicated” to her relationship with then-fiancé, actor Ben Affleck.

“I have to work, for my soul.” – Jennifer Lopez

Nearly two decades since the release of “On the Six,” Lopez has dropped seven more albums, and has a ninth album slated for release this year.

Lopez has embarked on five tours, and that has undoubtedly added to her net worth. Her first tour, aptly titled “Let’s Get Loud” was in 2001 and she walked away with a reported $765,000 in earnings, according to Money Nation.

The bank balances keep rising as her star does.

Lopez has earned an estimated $90 million for appearing on the big screen, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

She was also a judge on “American Idol” for three years. At a reported $12 million per season, according to Billboard, that’s an impressive $36 million for serving as a mentor to well, the next Jennifer Lopez.

J. Lo is also a business maven.

Just like Rihanna.

Aside from her musical and acting talents, Lopez is also a savy businesswoman. In 1998, she founded her clothing line that currently sells swimwear, eyewear, and fragrances. In 2004, her brand earned $300 million in revenue, making J. Lo the 19th richest person under 40, according to Fortune.

If you look at the difference in her first tour in 2001 and her one in 2012 ($765,000 to $50,362,300), you will notice it took over a decade to earn this type of money.

What does that tell me?

That building wealth TAKES TIME.

It took me 6 years to go from saving $1 a day to $50 a month to $15,000 a year!

I make a goal and then chart a course to get there no matter how long it takes.

Just like Jennifer Lopez.

Between her current residency in Las Vegas and worldwide clothing line, J. Lo is hardly short on funds.

On January 20, 2016, she debuted at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino her “All I Have” residency, dazzling fans with sequined pieces and elaborate sets.

On August 13, her shows reached an incredible milestone: $1 million in ticket sales, the highest grossing show in Planet Hollywood’s history, according to Billboard.

Between June 2016-June 2017, Lopez made $38 million dollars, consequently landing her at the #11 spot on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Female Celebrities of 2017. She’s also already made an estimated $47 million in 2018, according to Forbes.

Money advice I got from John Legend

“It’s not wrong to be afraid.” John Legend

John Legend is a Grammy and Oscar Award winning musician. The singer-songwriter won his first Grammy Award with 2004’s Get Lifted. The album went platinum, thanks in large part to his hit single “Ordinary People.”

He was a child piano prodigy. He skipped two grades and graduated from high school at 16.

Legend stated he was offered admission into Harvard University and scholarships to Georgetown University and Morehouse College. Ultimately, he chose to go to the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied English with an emphasis on African American literature.

He sang in the church choir (which he joined at 7 and was leading it by 11), was head of the music department in his church, served as a music director in college and also worked as a wedding singer.

He has done numerous interviews in his career and much of the information in this post comes from them. I discuss multiple ones in this post.

John has an estimated net worth of $40 million dollars.

He did an interview with Katherine Schwarzenegger for her 2014 book I Just Graduated… Now What?: Honest Answers from Those Who Have Been There. You may recognize the last name. Yes, she is the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver (Kennedy).

For more information on her famous father, you can read my post How Arnold Schwarzenegger Totally Recalls making $20 million-dollar paychecks.

How Arnold Schwarzenegger Totally Recalls making $20 million-dollar paychecks

His advice in that book inspired me to work harder to pay off all my credit card debt and start massively saving. See my post How Millennial Money inspired me to start saving $13, 333.06 a year

Here is some of what he had to say. (Not every word or quote is from her book, but numerous interviews) I highlight his advice in her book with KES (Ms. Schwarzenegger’s initials).  There they are (KES) on the board right behind her.

I really liked this book. So, I tweeted Ms. Schwarzenegger and told her so. She gave me a like. Thanks! I appreciated that. 👍😊

NO OVERNIGHT CELEBRITY

“I had followed the path that the Penn graduate was supposed to take, but I didn’t fall in love.” – John Legend

KES: John directed theater productions in school and performed in talent shows. He wanted to be a big star, but did not know the steps to get there. John said he had a fire in his belly.  No one was coming along to make him a star as he learned along the way. John had to put together a demo and have it produced by the right people. Anything that he was doing that wasn’t music, was going to be temporary.

After graduation, he switched gears (gave into peer pressure) and starting worked for the prestigious Boston Consulting Group, but would also perform in nightclubs in New York City.

Although, music is his first love, he worked a safe corporate job for three years while hustling to get his music off the ground. He received lots of rejections, but continued to side hustle as a musician playing anywhere he could.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL

Fear of failure stops too many people from doing things. It’s not wrong to be afraid, but you have to fight through fear to overcome it.” – John Legend quoted as saying this in Katherine’s book (KES)

Many of his friends became bankers and consultants so he did too. However, after following in their footsteps he found that was not meant for him. He was not cut out to be a consultant.

“I couldn’t shake my passion for music.” – John Legend

He made savvy moves to make his dream a reality. During the day he did PowerPoint presentations, but at night he wrote and performed music.

Fun Fact: While in college, Legend was introduced to Lauryn Hill by a friend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything.” That was his first album appearance.

WHY SIDE HUSTLE?

“I needed money. I lived in New York and had to pay my rent.”

KES: John didn’t have any financial support from his parents and he had student loans to pay back. He found that you could make good money in consulting.

He was rejected by all major labels. All the heads of these labels all turned him down.

KES: John paid his own way through college, racking up tons of student loans in the process. He had to deal with them after graduating college. He rolled the dice, took chances, and worked his butt off to follow his dreams, and never lost faith along the way.

Basically, he moonlighted his way to a music career.

BREAKTHROUGH

Havin’ money’s not everything, not havin’ it is. – Kanye West

John’s big break came out of relationships he had made. A college roommate (which was Kanye’s cousin) introduced John to a music producer in Chicago named Kanye West.

KES: John would go to the studio straight from worked dressed in his business attire. He said he definitely stood out from the way everyone else was dressed in the studio. He ended up getting a manager and a lawyer that were also well-connected. This was in 2002.

If you want to be treated like an adult, you have to dress like one. – Diane Kruger (actress and star of National Treasure) See my post on the film.

Money and Life Lessons I Learned from Disney’s film National Treasure

Through his collaboration with Yeezy, he was able to parlay that into a record deal. His first album was produced by Kanye. He got a deal with Sony.

That album would go on to earn eight Grammy nominations.

Years of toiling and hard work had paid off. It just goes to show, it’s not only what you know, it’s who you know. If you want to be taken serious, then you have to act like you do.

FIRST BIG PAYDAY

“When I got my first big check, I paid [my college loans] off. No more debt!” – John Legend

As you can see, his biggest earnings are from his music. It goes to show that passion can pay off big!

KES: John quit his job and started working part-time so he could focus more on his music. He struggled for a while, living on credit cards and skating by. Then he started making money touring with Kanye. In 2004, he got a deal with Columbia Records and when that happened he didn’t have to worry about money anymore. As soon as he got my record deal, he paid off all his student loans and credit card debt. He said no one ever told him about college loan debt and how to manage it.

Preaching to the choir here with not knowing how to manage debt. And in his case, that is literally speaking as he was in the church choir singing, which would become his meal ticket.

INVESTMENTS

“I bought a place [in Manhattan]. I just bought some art—some abstract stuff—and some collages are coming too. A friend who works at MoMA is like my art consultant. I just wanted nice stuff that would hold value.” – John Legend

You should always invest and buy things that go up in value. It just makes sense.

PASSION MAKES A GRAMMY WINNER

“But that cool detachment only gets you so far. Passion gets you a lot further. It makes you a better entrepreneur, a better leader, a better philanthropist, a better friend, a better lover.” – John Legend

He chose to pursue his interest. This made him his fortune. I call it the House that was built on a piano. 😉

Just FYI: John Legend is a 10-time Grammy Award winner. He won an Oscar for the song Glory in the film Selma.

How Dave Grohl turned passion into profits

“I never took lessons to learn how to play the drums, and I never took lessons to learn how to play guitar, l just sort of figured it out. I think that if you’re passionate about something and you’re driven and focused, that you can pretty much do anything that you want to do in life.” – Dave Grohl

I am a firm believer in being passionate about what you do. If you’re going to do it for a living, then you may as well enjoy it. That’s how I feel about finances. I can’t stop talking about it. So, I write about it.

It’s funny because growing up I always felt I wanted to be a writer. From the time I was in the 5th grade I knew writing stories made me happy. It just so happened I was able to combine my two passions and got this blog up and running.

I also try to learn from those who have turned their passion into a successful career. One person that really stood out for me in the music world was none other than one of the legendary grunge music founders: Dave Grohl.

DAVE GROHL THE BEGINNINGS

Dave Eric Grohl was born on January 14, 1969 in Warren, OH. He discovered his passion for guitar at the age of 10, started lessons at 12, and then started teaching himself at age 13. After he saw his first concert in 1982, he knew from then on that his music that he would play would be punk rock.

He went to several high schools in Virginia before finally dropping out to start playing in a rock band full-time. It was also at a concert in 1990, where Grohl met Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Little did he know these guys would be the start of his future in rock. They asked him to audition for their band. His passion, drive, and all out hardcore drumming impressed them and from there he became the new, fifth and final, drummer for the legendary band Nirvana. As one-third of the iconic Nirvana, he played with them from (1990-1994). And they played grunge music.

Grunge started around the 1980’s in Seattle. As a form of alternative rock, these bands changed the game in music. One band that stood out from the crowd was Nirvana.

NIRVANA FROM GRUNGE MUSIC TO MUSIC ROYALTY

After playing with Nirvana for a few years, they got the attention of major record labels.  Nirvana was signed to Geffen Records and recorded the iconic album “Nevermind” right after. This album, in 1991, had the hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which was a huge commercial success worldwide, became the anthem for grunge music and became one the top selling singles of all time, with 8 million copies sold. It also spawned the hit single “Come as you are” in 1992. Nirvana went from grunge music to music royalty, and became international superstars.

Nirvana became so big that their music had to be cut from the 1992 Cameron Crowe film soundtrack for “Singles” after they became famous. The song and band became so popular that the movie could not afford the rights to the song as it became too expensive by the time the studio released the movie. The album “Nevermind” was recorded over the course of a year and would go on to sell over 24 million albums worldwide. The band would go on to record 102 songs and become one of the biggest recording groups of all time.

After the death of Nirvana lead singer, Kurt Cobain, the grunge music scene was left reeling as many grunge bands in Seattle broke up and from there things were never the same. That is just how much Cobain and Nirvana had influenced alternative rock. Their talent as a band forever lives on in their music.

FOO FIGHTERS

Grohl went on to form the critically acclaimed bad the Foo Fighters in Seattle, Washington in 1994. Founded by the Nirvana drummer as a one-man project after the dissolution of Nirvana. Although, he was asked to join other bands, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, he turned them down to pursue his own vision and dreams.

According to an article in Rolling Stone magazine, devastated by the death of Cobain, he went to Ireland and was just in a daze driving around until he saw someone walking down the street wearing a Cobain T-shirt. From there he decided to go back to work. He then recorded a 15-track demo. This would become the Foo Fighters first album.

The band’s debut album “Foo Fighters” was in 1995 and they are still going strong today. In the band’s twenty plus year long career they have won four Grammys, recorded nine albums and sold over 12 million albums in the United States alone.

ADVICE FROM A ROCKSTAR

When Nirvana became popular, you could very easily slip and get lost during that storm. I fortunately had really heavy anchors – old friends, family. – Dave Grohl

No excess needed. Grohl has said he does not believe in rock-star excess. When Nirvana made it big and got popular he was renting a house with a friend. He had a lamp, futon, and a dresser. When the band sold over ten million records later, he still was in the same spot with the same lamp, futon, and dresser. He said he didn’t have much growing up, but does not remember ever needing anything. Grohl says, how much do you need?

When asked about what he does with his money, this is what Dave Grohl replied:

“It goes straight into my bank account, where it turns all moldy and smelly… I don’t waste my time thinking about how I could make more when I already got enough. I’m not a banker, I’m a musician.”

Nirvana (Cobain, Novoselic, and Grohl) would eventually be forever remembered by receiving one of the highest honors in music as they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10, 2014. The band has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. They are considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

More than one path to success. Coming from money and pursuing higher education are not the only ways to succeed. In an interview, Grohl stated “I never graduated school and I never had enough money for college.” He worked blue collar jobs and played music on the side. Now he’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Grohl says, “I want everyone to imagine that same opportunity is possible.”

Be true to yourself. Grohl’s advice to others after all his success is simple and honest which is just to be yourself as it has worked for him for the last 20 years. Grohl feels he is an earnest and nerdy guy, but it works.  His mother has described him as driven and determined with money never really being part of their conversation as he just wanted to work.

When he writes music, he wants a story behind it. He wants something that is relevant. And having sold over 100 million albums in two different bands it shows that it works. His mother says she believes people listen to his music because he is sincere. Basically, he could be the Phil Collins of alternative rock. As Phil Collins, is one of the only artists (there are only three) to ever sell 100 million albums as a solo artist and with a band.

He once even broke his leg during a concert, went to the hospital, and was back on stage within two hours playing guitar. That’s just how much passion he has for what he does.

I love to play music. So why endanger that with something like drugs? – Dave Grohl

Grohl says, “It’s important to me – that the stories that inspired me can inspire other people. I don’t feel like I’m on a mission. But I have the opportunity and the resources.” I take this advice to heart and I just try to be myself, do what interests and excites me, and just live my life. If it doesn’t excite me, then I probably won’t do it. Life is too short for mediocrity.

And just in case you were wondering, Nirvana went on to receive seven Grammy award nominations; winning one. The Foo Fighters have been nominated for 16 Grammys.

Grohl, the man behind the drums in Nirvana, and the lead guitarist in Foo Fighters, has received 15 Grammys out of 39 nominations. He continues to tour with the Foo Fighters and has amassed a fortune of $280 million dollars. Not bad for a high school dropout. It just goes to show; never give up on your dreams.

How Beyoncé and Jay-Z became a $1 billion couple

I don’t like to gamble, but if there’s one thing I’m willing to bet on, it’s myself. – Beyoncé

Hip-hop is more about attaining wealth. People respect success. They respect big. They don’t even have to like your music. If you’re big enough, people are drawn to you. – Jay-Z

The 2018 Grammy’s have come and gone. And even though Jay-Z went away empty-handed on January 28th, he is far from empty-pocketed.

Forbes listed his net worth as $810 million and Beyoncé with her own at $350 million net worth.

That’s right. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are a billion-dollar couple.

Through not only music and touring, but lucrative business dealings have made them a fortune.

Here is where it all began.

Jay-Z builds an empire

“By the time I got to record my first album, I was 26, I didn’t need pen or paper – my memory had been trained just to listen to a song, think of the words, and lay them to tape.” – Jay-Z

Back in 1996, a rising rap star named Jay-Z, who was known for memorizing lots of rhymes without writing them down, put out the album Reasonable Doubt.

It all began when Jay-Z and two others started their own record label, Roc-A-Fella Records, when the talented artist was unable to get a record deal.

It eventually went platinum. From there he would go on to record the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Hard Knock Life in 1998.

He has not slowed down since.

Jay-Z was a business owner and rapper as he rapped for the very label he owned.

And he would eventually go on and sell the label to Def Jam.

He became a record exec who helped launch the careers of Kanye West and Rihanna. And eventually served as CEO of Def Jam Records in 2004 (a job he took to assume control of his earlier master recordings with the label).

Jay-Z signs another huge deal with Live Nation for $200 million in 2017, his second big payday with the concert promoter. The first 10-year deal was for $150 million in 2008. Through this deal he makes millions in merchandising and concert revenue.

His interests outside of music (Rocawear, and stakes in 40/40 Club and the New Jersey Nets as a sports team owner) have netted him millions more. He sold Rocawear for a reported $204 million. It was said the deal in 2007, would net him around $35 million in cash. This cash infusion would be the seed money used to fund his other business ventures.

He has sold more than 28 million albums in his 15 plus-year solo career.

He has done numerous solo tours including going out on the road in 2013 to support one of his most recent albums, Magna Carta…Holy Grail.

He purchased the streaming service Tidal for $56 million back in 2015. It is now said to be worth $600 million.

He has used his ownership of Roc-A-Fella Records and Rocawear clothing brands to build what he has today.  In 2018, he is one of the richest musicians in the world.

Beyoncé builds her own empire

“Do what you were born to do. You just have to trust yourself.” – Beyoncé Knowles

Beyoncé decided at the tender young age of five that she wanted to be a performer after going to a Michael Jackson concert.

She sang in the choir at church, at school, and everywhere. She honed her craft. Practice, practice, practice.

After appearing on star search in 1993, and later landing a record deal with her singing group in 1997 with Columbia Records, from there she would rise to fame in the late 1990s with the R&B girl group Destiny’s Child.

As a member of Destiny’s Child, she has sold 17 million albums. The group went on to sell more than 60 million albums worldwide. Their 1999 album ‘The Writings On The Wall’ sold over 15 million copies worldwide and was one of the top selling albums of 2000.

The 2016 release of Lemonade exclusively on Tidal debuted at No. 1, and became her sixth album. She is the first ever female artist to have every one of her solo albums debut at No 1.

As a solo artist, she has sold 16 million records in the U.S. alone and 100 million worldwide.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé empire as a power couple

“Those who are successful overcome their fears and take action. Those who aren’t submit to their fears and live with regrets.” – Jay-Z

“And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible.” –Beyoncé

They both own equity in Tidal, which is worth $600 million. That is more than 10 times what Jay-Z paid for it.

In addition, together they both own over $100 million in Real Estate holdings.

Headlining tours independently and together for the 2014 joint On The Run Tour with Beyoncé,  has netted them millions more. This tour earned well over 9 figures with a staggering over $100 million in ticket sales. Making them one of the most profitable touring and recording artists today.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé amassed their fortune from hard work, savvy business acumen, and ownership. Simply put, they own what they do.

All this combined has made them into the billion-dollar couple you see today.

Basically, to build wealth, you have to own. Whether it is a business, stocks, or real estate the money comes from owning.

Side note: Jay-Z is a 21-time Grammy winner and Beyoncé is a 22-time winner. Just in case you were wondering.
