Jenny from the Bronx has parlayed her talent into major coin.

Her estimated net worth is over $300 million.

Insider reported it as high as $400 million!

So how did Jenny from the block earn her wealth?

Well, you are about to find out.

As you may know, I am on a mission: financial freedom.

Therefore, I started to study the self-made.

How did they get so wealthy? What did they do? What do they do with their 24 hours we are given in a single day?

Today we talk all things J to the L-O! Hello!

Let’s go!!!

STARTING OUT

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in Castle Hill, New York City. Growing up in the Bronx with her parents and siblings she watched how hard her parents worked to make a living as Puerto Ricans living in the richest country in the world.

She knew that she had a responsibility to do well because her parents gave and sacrificed so much.

She was quoted in an interview as saying, “I had to do well. I couldn’t let them (her parents) down.”

Jennifer says she was always training for something. And dance become her go to activity.

DANCING TO THE FRONT

In 1991, Lopez began appearing as a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color, where she remained a regular until she decided to pursue an acting career in 1993.

I love the lyrics to that song and how it starts out.

Burned by the fire

My love is blind

Can’t you see my desire

That’s the way love goes

So you could say like a moth to a flame, J. LO gravitated towards acting. Haha

You also may remember her dancing with Puffy or P. Diddy, as he goes by now, in the music video “Been Around The World.” That was in 1997. Haven’t seen it. No problem.

The movie Selena would make Jennifer Lopez one of the highest paid Latina’s in film.

Many have reported that she is the highest-paid Latina film actress in history.

It was estimated that she received a $1 million payday for the film.

Her life and BANK ACCOUNT has never been the same.

A STAR IS BORN TO SING

Just keep your head down and work. Success comes when you work harder than everybody else. – Jennifer Lopez

After wrapping the film, Jennifer Lopez decided her next ambition would be recording an album. She set her sights on making this goal happen.

She got a record deal and worked with music super producer Tommy Mottola of Sony.

In an interview she said that people did not believe in her project; therefore, she had to put some of her own money into it.

You get what you give. What you put into things is what you get out of them. – Jennifer Lopez

That pet project would become her first album: On the 6.

As reported by Insider, Lopez’s debut single “If You Had My Love” was released in May 1999, and it immediately landed on the Billboard charts. In fact, “If You Had My Love” became the first debut single to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” a mere four months earlier.

One month later in June, her debut album “On the 6” was released, effectively solidifying Lopez’s status as a Latin pop artist. Certified by the RIAA, “On the 6” is 3x platinum, selling 3.42 million units worldwide.

She never looked back.

AIN’T IT FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT

Here is the video just in case you have not seen it.

She also did the song “Ain’t it Funny.” Again featuring her partner in crime (of making sweet music that is) Ja Rule. Together this pair made magic happen. They just had great chemistry when working together.

Ain’t it funny dropped off the J. LO album on June 20, 2001.

Here are some lyrics for you.

J to the L-O

Hello

Well now you know where I got that from, which I state at the beginning of this post. 😉

Here is the chorus

Ain’t it funny

Baby that you want me, when you had me

Love is crazy, I’m glad I can smile and say

Ain’t it funny

Then came “Jenny from the Block.” This song dropped on September 26, 2002.  One of her HOTTEST music videos! If you had no idea what she was capable or of who she was, then this video stopped all doubts.

The lyrics go like this.

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got

I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block

Love my life and my public

Put God first

Then can’t forget to stay real

To me it’s like breathing

Ah yes, she says to stay real or I’m real in this song. An obvious reference to her song I’m real with Ja Rule. 😉

Here is the chorus.

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got

I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block

Used to have a little, now I have a lot

No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!)

Check it out here.

Unlike her previous studio albums: On the 6 (1999) and J.Lo (2001), Lopez had a more “hands-on” role on This Is Me… Then. The 2002 album also had more of an adult-R&B sound. Musically, majority of the songs on This Is Me… Then were lyrically “dedicated” to her relationship with then-fiancé, actor Ben Affleck.

“I have to work, for my soul.” – Jennifer Lopez

Nearly two decades since the release of “On the Six,” Lopez has dropped seven more albums, and has a ninth album slated for release this year.

Lopez has embarked on five tours, and that has undoubtedly added to her net worth. Her first tour, aptly titled “Let’s Get Loud” was in 2001 and she walked away with a reported $765,000 in earnings, according to Money Nation.

The bank balances keep rising as her star does.

Lopez has earned an estimated $90 million for appearing on the big screen, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

She was also a judge on “American Idol” for three years. At a reported $12 million per season, according to Billboard, that’s an impressive $36 million for serving as a mentor to well, the next Jennifer Lopez.

J. Lo is also a business maven.

Just like Rihanna.

Aside from her musical and acting talents, Lopez is also a savy businesswoman. In 1998, she founded her clothing line that currently sells swimwear, eyewear, and fragrances. In 2004, her brand earned $300 million in revenue, making J. Lo the 19th richest person under 40, according to Fortune.

A decade later, in 2012, J. Lo set out for her first worldwide tour, the Dance Again World Tour. After 78 shows, this would be Lopez’s highest-earning tour, and she pocketed $50,362,300, according to Money Nation.

If you look at the difference in her first tour in 2001 and her one in 2012 ($765,000 to $50,362,300), you will notice it took over a decade to earn this type of money.

What does that tell me?

That building wealth TAKES TIME.

It took me 6 years to go from saving $1 a day to $50 a month to $15,000 a year!

I make a goal and then chart a course to get there no matter how long it takes.

Just like Jennifer Lopez.

Between her current residency in Las Vegas and worldwide clothing line, J. Lo is hardly short on funds.

On January 20, 2016, she debuted at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino her “All I Have” residency, dazzling fans with sequined pieces and elaborate sets.

On August 13, her shows reached an incredible milestone: $1 million in ticket sales, the highest grossing show in Planet Hollywood’s history, according to Billboard.

Between June 2016-June 2017, Lopez made $38 million dollars, consequently landing her at the #11 spot on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Female Celebrities of 2017. She’s also already made an estimated $47 million in 2018, according to Forbes.

Money and Life Lessons from the film Beyond the Lights

“Truth is the only safe ground to stand on.” – Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Beyond the Lights was released November 14th 2014. I went on a rare visit to the theater that weekend because I loved the trailer with the Sia song Chandelier where she was out on that balcony. It stopped me in my tracks. So, I decided to go see the film. I was impressed and that doesn’t happen often.

I was really and pleasantly surprised by the film, but mostly the depth of the actress playing the lead, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (from the film Belle).

The fashion was amazing. All her outfits and costume choices were on FIRE. Every dress was a showstopper. And she pulled it off. The hair, the attitude, the choreography, everything.

I thought it was Rihanna when she first appeared as a music superstar on the screen. She blew me away. This actress was amazing in every scene she did. EVERY. SINGLE. SCENE.

This is the best film I have ever scene revolving or about a pop star.

When I left that theater, all I knew was a star was born. I can’t remember the last time I felt like that. The film was really touching and really moved me. She showed such a range of emotions. An excellent actress indeed.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, this is the movie info, Beyond the Lights is the story of Noni, the music world’s latest superstar. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge – until she meets Kaz Nicol, a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail. Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance. But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be. (c) Relativity

Now, that you have the background, let’s talk about what happens beyond the lights.

EVERYONE WANTS TO COME IN 1ST

Do you want to be a runner up, or do you want to be a winner? – Noni’s mother and mom-ager, played by Minnie Driver

As a young girl, Noni has a voice like no other. Her mother notices her talent and signs her up for a talent show singing none other than the famous Nina Simone’s Blackbird.

However, the ending of this scene was very sad. It would set up the balance of power between mother and daughter that would play out for the rest of the film.

What you learn is that as important it is to win, you also must feel good about what you are doing and know why you are doing it. Passion is great, but not if you are not able to use it.

MASTERPIECE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN SUCCESS

She goes from that sweet little girl into an adult in the very next scene.  From an innocent little kitten and sweet baby angel into a video vixen.  She perfected the pop-star persona. Down to the constant changing of her very detailed nail designs. See for yourself.

This scene is immediately followed up by her first music award win.

Noni does not seem very happy.

I always thought lots of people wanted this success. Which her mother states several times throughout the film.

It is not enough just to have success, if it is not done the right way.

ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN’T GOLD

Noni can no longer take the fake life she has set herself up in. She doesn’t want to do this anymore.

What I learned here is that if you no longer hold your head up high and can look yourself in the mirror, then what’s the point. You have to treat yourself with the utmost self-respect.

All around her there was a lack of respect for her as a woman and an artist. You have to tell people how you want to be treated. People can only do what you let them. Speak up and talk to a doctor or adult and let them know how you feel. Don’t let anyone silence you into submission.

NEED TO FREE UP THE SCHEDULE

Sometimes you just have to be free. You can’t work yourself non-stop and to the bone.

There were times when there was just no light in Noni’s eyes. It was sad to see her so hurt. This woman has a record contract and is about to release an album. She is staying in the best hotels and holding press conferences. The only problem was that no one wanted to hear what she had to say.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

Progress rarely comes from those who are content and secure. It comes from those who are unsettled by what they’ve seen. – Kaz, played by Nate Parker

THE PRESSURE IS REAL WHEN YOU ARE SELLING A FANTASY

MILES HIGH AND YET STILL SO FAR FROM HAPPINESS

IT’S LONELY AT THE TOP

Best music scene in the film, the performance of Private Property by Noni.

The music was so good in the film that it felt like she could have been an artist. I liked the soundtrack, but you wanted more Noni.

The songs were great. Very pop feel. That’s because they were written by none other than The Dream (he wrote Beyonce’s Single Ladies and Rihanna’s Umbrella).

MONEY IS HOLLOW AND EMPTY

At one point, she tells him this is my new crib. A swanky place in Los Angeles. It looked every bit of a million dollar bachelorette pad. Yet, she was miserable.

Money is just a tool. It is not good or bad. Your actions give it meaning and power. I have learned to choose wisely if I am going to spend my dime. I watch my coins carefully and spend wisely.

See the film for yourself

It has been 4 years, and no matter how many times I see this film it makes me feel something bigger is going on behind all those lights. If even a fraction of this film is what some artists have gone threw, I know some changes need to be made in how we treat people and how we listen to them.

MEET NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR BRENDA JACKSON

Ms. Brenda Jackson has written numerous romance novels over the past two decades. One of her most notable book series is for a family named the Westmoreland’s. I was able to speak with Ms. Jackson for a peek behind the writing curtain and found out how she went from novice middle school writer to full-time novelist for Harlequin, the world’s largest romance book publisher.

I was outside reading one her books entitled; The Secret Affair, a Westmoreland novel, and a complete stranger saw me and said, “that’s a good book.” I know. That was probably my 30th time reading it at that point! It also happens to be my favorite Brenda Jackson novel. Just in case you couldn’t tell.

I got a chance to interview the best-selling author with a Q&A session. You can read my interview with Ms. Jackson here and find out more about the woman behind the romance.

And here we go…

Thank you Ms. Jackson for taking the time for me to interview you. Let’s get right into it!

What made you become a writer? How did you get started writing romance?

My mother asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up. During those days many women went into the teaching profession because during the 1960’s and 1970’s, becoming a teacher was the job most available to women. I said that I want to be a professional woman, go to the office, and wear a nice suit.

However, until then, I liked to write stories. In school, around the 8th grade, after meeting my future husband Mr. Jackson, I started writing innocent little love stories.

What were your stories about?

I would write about school stories and outings. Like an American beach story. My church sponsored beach trips and I would write stores like the beach movies I saw. Similar to the Gidget and Moondoggie stories from the Gidget movies.

I would hand-write stories on notebook paper and write it out about four or five times and then pass it out to groups of kids at school.

How did you start writing for Harlequin?

It actually took some time. Harlequin was not my first publisher. This happened years later after writing books for another book publisher.

When did you start writing professionally?

I did not start out a writer. I went to work for State Farm and stayed there for over 30 years while working my way up into management before retiring.

While I was working and moving up the ranks, I ended up going to my high school reunion. It was there that people kept asking me what I did for a living and when I told them the most common response was that they all said they thought I would be a writer.

So, I decided I would start writing again. I sent out requests to get published, but major publishers and Harlequin rejected me. Those publishers said, unless there was a market for the types of novels I was writing that they were not interested.

I received 40 to 50 rejections.

However, I did not give up and was given a contract with Kensington books.

How did it feel to get accepted? What happened after you got your book deal?

It felt good. First, I started out writing as a hobby and now I am being paid for it. It was wonderful.

I started writing manuscripts with African-American characters. Those books were initially rejected and denied by other publishers, but Kensington was the one publisher that took a chance and felt there was a market for this genre.

I started writing and publishing my books and then they took off.

How did you get started with Harlequin?

After writing 20 or so books, I had a following and with that success Harlequin then reached out to me.

Harlequin wanted me write for them and so after my agent called and then speaking with them I decided to accept. At this point, I was writing for more than one publisher.

However, it took many years of writing and hard work before I started writing for Harlequin. I had positioned for that and one day I received an offer to write for them.

Harlequin later asked me to be exclusive. I told them that they would have to pay me for exclusivity. They made me a deal of a lifetime. My contract was good. Even more than Kensington.

The deal was so good that I left my six-figure salary job with State Farm.

I had made more money writing books than I ever dreamed of making.

How long have you been a writer?

I started writing over 20 years ago. I was still working for State Farm and began writing in the 1980’s and 1990’s. I would go away on conferences and write in my hotel room when I was not attending any workshops making sure to that I wrote on my time and not theirs.

While at State Farm, they supported my career and my dreams as a writer. They also helped promote my career. State Farm sent me to college and I majored in business at Jacksonville University in Florida. They would sponsor me to go on book tours. And I would do books signings.

I would represent my company wherever I went. I also later got football sponsors from HBCU’s such as the Bayou East West Classics.

In the beginning, I would go around to libraries and ask them if they would carry my books.

While in college, I mapped out what I wanted to do. I also became a Delta after joining their sorority and have kept a relationship with my fellow Deltas to this day.

Where do you write?

I essentially had two incomes while still working at State Farm and writing and made sure to purchase a home and paid off the mortgage. So, my home in Florida is paid for and I have no mortgage.

And this where I write. From home. I built an in-home office where I go and work. I still had a morning routine where I would get up, get dressed, and go downstairs to work.

What was your first published work?

The Madaris Family. One of their novels was my very first work. It was called Tonight and Forever.

What are your favorite characters? What types of romance novels do you like to write?

I have so many favorites. Just too many.

I like to write reunion books and about first love. How love starts, grows, and blossoms and becomes full circle. It feels so good.

Did your husband inspire any of the stories you have written? Are any characters based on him?

He always has and always will. He influences my writing. I write my characters as I see him, which is as the Alpha male. In my novels, you are the king. I get that feeling and like romance.  I feel that that could be in any man and so I write them that way.

I married my high school sweetheart, Gerald, and I still have the going-steady ring he gave me at 15.

I read that you are a New York Times (NYT) Best Selling Author. Congratulations! What book(s) have made it onto this prestigious list? Are there more than one?

I have had most of my books on the USA Today Best Sellers List but some titles like the Westmoreland’s and Madaris have made the NYT list series genre.

Some books do not qualify for the market so I started my own publishing company, Madaris Publishing Company. Those books as well as my other titles are sold on my online store.

How many books have you written?

I have written 120 books. I am now on my 124th book.

Wow! How many books do you write each year?

I used to write six to eight books a year when I started writing exclusively for Harlequin. I now write two to three a year. Typically, I submit a book for Harlequin every nine months or basically one a year.

Some of my books are now being turned into films. One of my publishers, BET, made one into a movie.

Do you have a favorite book you have written? Any favorite characters?

Ties that Bind is my favorite. It’s longer than my other books. It’s about four couples that met in 1968 on campus at Howard University. It’s during the time of MLK, civil rights, Black Panthers, and Vietnam. It was also featured in the Washington Post.

Zion is one of my favorite characters. He is a jewelry maker and a bad boy.

Are you currently reading any good books?

Not presently. I spend so much time writing that I do not always get a chance to read other books.

However, I am doing research for a book of mine that is being turned into a movie. The Grangers is a three book series and the climax is in the third book. I get script approval, so I am studying how to promote A Brother’s Honor. The film will be on the Passionflix network. We want to make sure the script still has the Happily Ever After (HEA) in there.

Any inspirational words or advice for aspiring authors?

Know your genre and do your research. Focus on tone. Write from the heart.

Where can people find you?

You can find me on Twitter, Facebook, via email, and my website.
